This thread is intended for rrecovery, lyciall, bitosense and supoze....and anyone else who might be interested!! We were having a bit of a debate on the origins of this song and the ad in the dumb store clerks thread.

After spending WAAAY too much time looking up this stuff online I humbly bow to the wisdom of rrecovery. Despite my internet research to prove him wrong, he held fast to the notion that the ad came first and then the song without the references to Coca Cola , and let me be the first to admit he was right - I was WRONG!!! (bowing my head in defeat).

Part of the confusion lies in the fact that there are two ads - the original 1971 version and then a 1977 Christmas version, the latter being the one I was familiar with as a child.

You can read about the history of the original ad here, and find out why there were two chart-topping versions of the song by two bands released practically at the same time by The New Seekers and The Hillside Singers:
http://rs6.loc.gov/ammem/ccmphtml/colaadv.html

You can view the original ad here:
http://www.adcritic.com/content/coca-cola-teach-the-world-to-sing.html

To view the Christmas version go here:
http://pages.cthome.net/co/eacomm.htm

Ray Conniff has also recorded this song. And Gomer too! Click here to hear Jim Nabors rendition!
http://cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=1249103878/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND/album.html/artistid=NABORS*JIM/itemid=330319

To hear a "lovely" midi rendition - LOL - click here:
http://www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/Glade/7438/TeachWorld.html

THE AD:

I'd like to buy the world a home and furnish it with love,
Grow apple trees and honey bees, and snow white turtle doves.
I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony,
I'd like to buy the world a Coke and keep it company.
[Repeat the last two lines, and in the background:]
It's the real thing, Coke is what the world wants today.

THE SONG:

I'd like to build the world a home
And furnish it with love
Grow apple trees and honey bees
And snow-white turtle doves.

I'd like to teach the world to sing In perfect harmony
I'd like to hold it in my arms
And keep it company.

I'd like to see the world for once All standing hand in hand
And hear them echo through the hills
"Ah, peace throughout the land."

(That's the song I hear) (That the world sings today)
I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony.

(That's the song I hear) (That the world sings today)
(That's the song I hear)

(That the world sings today)

(That's the song I hear)

(That the world sings today)

I'd like to build the world a home And furnish it with love
Grow apple trees and honey bees
And snow-white turtle doves.

I'd like to teach the world to sing In perfect harmony
I'd like to hold it in my arms

And keep it company.

Artists: The New Seekers 1971-72 Words and Music by:
Roquel Davis, Roger John Reginald Greenaway,
Roger F. Cook, and William M. Backer

Why have I spent so much time on this? God only knows!!! LOL!!! I never even liked the darn song!!

lol..I am so sorry I even mentioned it in the first place. I just felt sorry for the new poster as the thread had been ignored for quite sometime with only one very rude remark from someone else, and that was all I could come up with.

I for one love that song, and thank you so kindly for providing all the lyrics and all the great information :)

Although I still don't believe that was Gomer singing it...there's no way. Seeing as you are an excellant researcher....can you show proof...hehe...

Yep, Lyciall, definately Jim Nabors (more commonly known as "Gomer Pyle, USMC".) I've been a great fan of his music from the time I was a kid, during the late 60s and 70s. A most fabulous singing talent, if you ask me, and that song doesn't come close to doing him justice. Reply to this message

Uh Uh...No way. When I think of Gomer I think "surprise surprise surprise" and I hear that oh so awful voice...aint no way. That clip I heard had a beautiful deep voice, not a high gratin on your nerves kinda voice. (But I sure do love Gomer...no matter what he sounds like...lol)

By The Way, during my research I came across this interesting site:
http://www.sodafountain.com

Supposedly it's the original formula for Coca Cola! I saw it in the newspaper a few years back and was wondering what I'd done with the clipping, and lo and behold here it is! I'll just have to go and whip me up a batch right now! LOL! I should be done in about the time it takes me to go and open up my refrigerator! There are also alleged recipes for Hire's Root Beer and Pepsi!
